The oldest building on the territory is the church of St. Anthony, which was built over his tomb. Inside is the largest collection of Copt wall paintings, which have been dated from the 13th to 16th centuries. About 100 monks still live in the monastery today.
Saint Paul of Thebes from a wealthy family and also at a young age left his native land of Alexandria and settled in a cave in the Arabian mountains. The history of the monastery, which was built near the cave where he lived, dates back to the 5th century AD. It was founded a century after the death of the Saint at the burial place. It is still an important place of pilgrimage for believers from all over the world.
In the cave there is the church of St. Paul, icons, candelabra, altars and also a sarcophagus, where the relics of the Saint are kept according to giving.
